Student loan holders are advised to apply for the program's loan forgiveness

See who is eligible

Many Americans are waiting for the decision of the Biden administration on the cancellation of federal student loans, the Department of Education is urging millions of Americans to apply for already established loan forgiveness initiatives.

The secretary of the Education Department, Miguel Cardona tweeted on Thursday that the office of the Federal Student Aid was communicating through emails to about 22 million of the 45.3 United States borrowers, encouraging them to check their eligibility in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness initiative.

PSLF, a common name for the initiative is created to assist specific borrowers, employed in the public sector by waiving their outstanding student loans after making about 120 payments within a period of 10 years. Just only 20% of about 1.3 million borrowers want their loans forgiven using PSLF which is very low, but according to a report by the Student Borrower Protection Center, this percentage is set to increase by 2026.

Did you attend any of these schools? You might qualify for student loan forgiveness.

The Department of Education released a waiver on certain PSLF requirements to offer credit to borrowers towards the forgiveness of their loan irrespective of the type of federal loan or registered in a certain payment plan, inasmuch as their debt is consolidated into a Direct Loan before the waiver ends.

Borrowers were previously required to have a certain federal loan before the waiver, a Direct Loan, to be eligible for PSLF. But loan payments made prior to consolidation won't have any impact on the required amount.

Currently, the waiver will expire by October 31, 2022, which implies that qualified borrowers are not having up to four months to submit their application. The head of the Federal Student Aid, Richard Cordray indicated at a conference at the beginning of the year that while he is attempting to see the waiver extended, the executive authority to approve the move might not b available to President Biden.

PSLF eligibility

More than 9 million public service employees are likely eligible for debt forgiveness using the PSLF initiative, but haven’t submitted an application, according to a recent report from the Student

Borrower Protection Center SBPC, the highest number of public service employees are in New York, Florida, Texas, and California.

Major changes were introduced by the Biden administration to the federal student loan system.

Qualified borrowers are required to:

Be an employee of a United States, local, state, federal, or tribal government or non-profit organization (federal service such as U.S. military service).

Be a full-time worker in these establishments

Obtain Direct Loans (or have consolidated with other federal student loans into the Direct Loan)

Have made up to 120 eligible payments

According to the PSLF waiver, qualifying borrowers can get credits for other loan payments, based on the payment plan, prior to consolidation, or after the deadline. Individuals who took out the

Teacher Lone forgiveness can submit an application during the service period, which would qualify them for PSLF if the PSLF employment can be authorized during that period.

How to identify your eligibility for PSLF?

The first step is to log into your account at FRA’s website. Then, search through the FRA database for your employer and include your employment information.
